Safety by Choice, Not by Chance: Why Safety Matters Every Day at Nor-Son Construction
July 2, 2026
June is National Safety Month — a great time to recognize the importance of creating safe workplaces. At Nor-Son Construction, we go beyond the hard hats and safety glasses and work hard to cultivate a culture of safety, rooted in responsibility shared by every team member. Our ‘Safety by Choice, Not by Chance’ commitment is built into everything we do, from the office to the jobsite.
“Safety starts at preconstruction,” says Nick Dionisopoulos, General Superintendent at Nor-Son Construction. “It’s definitely a team effort. Everyone is held accountable by one another to work safe so everyone can go home at night.”
That mindset is reflected not only in Nor-Son’s day-to-day operations, but also in the company’s long-standing safety performance and continued investment in training, accountability, and proactive safety measures.

Leading with Safety
Nor-Son continues to lead the industry in safety performance through strong partnerships with safety organizations, ongoing education, and a commitment to staying ahead of industry standards.
The company maintains an impressive 0.79 Experience Modification Rate (EMR) — indicating Nor-Son’s workplace safety record is significantly better than the industry average. A lower EMR indicates that a company has a strong commitment to workplace safety and does a good job managing risks and preventing injuries.
Effective risk management is a key part of maintaining a strong safety record. By identifying potential hazards early, evaluating jobsite risks, and implementing preventive measures before work begins, Nor-Son helps protect employees and everyone on the jobsite, keeping projects running safely and efficiently.
Nor-Son Construction also maintains an OSHA Level 2 Partnership and requires extensive employee safety education, including the standard OSHA 10 training. In addition, the company hosts quarterly safety Toolbox Talks training sessions to reinforce best practices and address evolving jobsite conditions.
Safety First with Clear Expectations and Onsite Education
“We do first-day, first-hour jobsite orientation for every subcontractor and Nor-Son employee,” Dionisopoulos explains. “That way everyone is familiar with the site-specific safety rules from the start.”
Subcontractors are also required to meet Nor-Son’s safety expectations set forth through the contracting process and receive onsite orientation on each project, helping ensure every person working on a Nor-Son project understands the high standards and procedures in place.
Going Beyond Requirements
At Nor-Son Construction, safety means staying ahead rather than waiting for regulations to catch up. The company recently implemented upgraded safety helmets, even before they became required industry-wide, as part of its proactive approach to employee protection. Nor-Son also enforces 100% hard hat and safety glasses usage and requires fall protection for work performed above six feet. “We provide all personal protective equipment for our employees,” Dionisopoulos says. “Anything over six feet, employees must be tied off or have fall protection around them.”
One especially notable result of these efforts came after the implementation of mandatory safety glasses. “We decreased eye injuries by 100%,” Dionisopoulos notes. That willingness to adopt stronger protections before mandates take effect reflects Nor-Son’s larger philosophy: safety is not reactive — it is intentional.
Accountability and Recognition
A strong safety culture depends on more than rules and policies. It requires buy-in, teamwork, and recognition. Nor-Son supports that culture through its Safety Reward Incentive Program, designed to encourage safe behaviors and recognize employees who demonstrate a commitment to jobsite safety excellence.
The results are visible. In 2025, Nor-Son celebrated multiple perfect jobsite safety audits, with several team members recognized for achieving outstanding safety performance. Recent audits continue to reinforce the effectiveness of the company’s approach, including a strong record of near-perfect jobsite evaluations.
The company’s dedication to safety has also earned long-term recognition through its Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) safety awards, a distinction Nor-Son has maintained since 2002.
Additionally, Nor-Son partners with OSHA/Environmental Compliance Systems (OECS), an industry leader in workplace safety, safety training, and regulatory compliance. Through this partnership, Nor-Son collaborates on site safety audits, employee training, policy updates, and continuous improvement of workplace practices.
Safety Every Day
National Safety Month offers an opportunity to pause and recognize the importance of workplace safety, but at Nor-Son, the commitment extends far beyond June.
Whether through ongoing training, enhanced equipment, jobsite accountability, or proactive planning, Nor-Son’s philosophy remains clear: Safety by Choice, Not by Chance. Because at the end of every workday, the most important outcome is simple — making sure every employee goes home safely.
As we recognize National Safety Month, Nor-Son remains committed to fostering a culture where safety is woven into every decision, every project, and every partnership. Interested in learning more about the Nor-Son difference? We’d love to connect.
